TL;DR / The short answer

To win featured snippets and AI Overviews, phrase headings as the exact questions people search, answer each one in 40 to 60 words directly underneath, then add detail, lists or tables. Keep schema matching the visible text, and track which queries you win in Google Search Console.

Imagine a journalist interviewing you. They ask one sharp question. You have one breath to answer before they cut to the next guest. Whatever you say in that breath is what gets printed.

That is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) in a sentence. Search engines, voice assistants and AI Overviews are the journalist. Your page is the interview. Most pages ramble.

## What counts as an “answer engine”?

Any system that responds with an answer instead of a list of links:

- **Featured snippets**: the boxed answer above the regular results.
- **People Also Ask**: the expanding questions halfway down the page.
- **Google AI Overviews**: the generated summary at the top, with source links.
- **Voice assistants**: which read out one answer, not ten.

They all reward the same thing: a clear answer, clearly placed.

## Step 1: Steal the question, word for word

Start in Google Search Console. Filter queries that start with how, what, why, which, can or does. These are questions people already associate with your site.

Then turn each into a heading, keeping the searcher’s wording. “How long does a technical SEO audit take?” beats “Audit timelines” every time, because it matches what is typed and what is spoken.

## Step 2: The 40 to 60 word answer

Directly under the question, write the answer. Not the background, not the history, the answer.

A useful pattern:

1. **Sentence one** answers the question in plain words.
2. **Sentence two** adds the most important condition or number.
3. **Sentence three** (optional) points to the detail below.

Then expand as much as you like underneath. The top answer is for the engine; the depth is for the reader who stays.

## Step 3: Match the format to the question

Different questions get lifted in different shapes:

| Question type | Best format | Example |
| ------------- | --------------- | --------------------------- |
| What is, why | Short paragraph | “What is AEO?” |
| How to | Numbered steps | “How to submit a sitemap” |
| Which, best | Bulleted list | “Best tools for SEO audits” |
| Compare, cost | Table | “SEO vs AEO vs GEO” |

If your content is a comparison buried in paragraphs, turn it into a table. Engines love structure because it is easy to extract.

## Step 4: Mark it up honestly

Structured data does not win snippets on its own, but it removes doubt. Use `FAQPage` for genuine question and answer sections, `HowTo` style numbered steps in the visible content, and `Article` or `BlogPosting` for posts. A `speakable` hint can point voice assistants at your summary.

One rule matters more than any markup detail: **the schema must match what users can see.** Hidden answers in JSON-LD are a fast way to lose trust.

## Step 5: Track what you win

In Search Console, compare clicks and impressions for your question queries before and after the rewrite. Search the questions yourself in an incognito window and note when your page becomes the snippet or a cited source in an AI Overview.

Some wins bring fewer clicks, because the answer is satisfied on the results page. That is fine. Being the visible answer builds brand recall, and the people who do click are usually the ones ready to act.

## Your next step

Pick your three most valuable pages. Add one real question heading and one 40 to 60 word answer to each. That small change is often enough to start appearing in answer boxes within weeks.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long should a featured snippet answer be?

+

Aim for about 40 to 60 words for paragraph answers. That is long enough to be complete and short enough to be lifted as is. List and table snippets follow the structure of your list or table instead.

### Does FAQ schema still get rich results?

+

Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results mainly for well known, authoritative government and health websites. FAQPage markup still helps machines understand your answers, but do not expect the expandable FAQ display for most sites.

### Can I choose which text Google uses as the snippet?

+

Not directly. Google picks the passage it thinks answers best. You can make your preferred answer the most obvious candidate by placing it right under a matching question heading and keeping it concise.
